Why Small Businesses Need a Web Presence

Do-It-Yourself Website

From Microsoft FrontPage to Macromedia Dreamweaver to Adobe GoLive, there is no shortage of what-you-see-is-what-you-get (wysiwyg) layout software. Even without knowledge of HTML, anyone can put together a web page and templates allow for a pre-packaged, yet professional looking site. These programs also have downloadable add-ons that allow non-programmers to add things like shopping cart functionality with push-button ease.

If you are unfamiliar with the software and web browser compatibility (and Mac vs. PC web browser issues) you may end up with a site that doesn't look right in some browsers. It can also take longer to do the layout and graphics if your area of expertise is not graphics and layout, and your less likely to use things like includes and stylesheets that will make updates much easier in the future.

Pros Cons
Inexpensive Can be time consuming
Non-experienced web designers may create sites that are harder to keep up
Graphics still need to be designed
Pages may load more slowly due to extra code that wysiwygs sometimes generate
You have to learn the software and deal with the technical issues yourself

Online Content Management System (CMS)

Online Content Management Systems can be inexpensive or expensive, it depends on the product and the goals of the site. However, each provide an interface to your web pages so that you don't have to know code, you just type your content in and "publish" your site. Some provide stock templates, others require designs. Godaddy.com's Web site Tonight is one example; x2cms web solutions packages are another and there are many more.

Pros Cons
Easy to get content up and looking 'professional'
Can provide a professional looking site for less than hiring a professional designer
I can be a quick way to get a site up. With stock templates, you could have a site up in hours.
Can be expensive
May have less control over look of the site "branding"
May not incorporate all the features you want on your site
May look less professional, depending on user skill and templates
